Nitazenes are a class of synthetic drugs that have gained attention in the United States and other countries in recent years. The prevalence of nitazenes in the illegal drug supply has been on the rise since 2019. Recent evidence suggests nitazenes may be more potent than fentanyl and may require a higher dose of naloxone in case of overdose.1 In the same study, several individuals who overdosed on nitazenes were unaware that their drugs contained it.1

BTNX Rapid Response™ Nitazene Test Strips are rapid visual immunoassay strips used for the qualitative, presumptive detection of nitazene in suspicious liquid or powder substances. The test is intended for harm reduction, forensic, and IVD use.
The strips are designed to detect nitazene in liquid or powder samples at a cut-off concentration of 500 ng/mL.
Nitazenes are synthetic opioids that may be found in the unregulated drug supply. Because nitazenes can be potent and dangerous, testing can support harm reduction by helping identify possible nitazene presence in a sample.
The BTNX Rapid Response™ Nitazene Test Strip is designed for use with liquid or powder samples. Users should always follow the instructions provided with the product, resources can be found linked above.
The Nitazene Test Strips provides instant, rapid results. A negative result can be interpreted once both the test line and control line appear, while a positive result can typically be interpreted once the control line appears and the background clears to white, usually by 60 seconds. Results should not be read after 10 minutes.
A positive result indicates the presence of nitazene in the sample. It does not show how much nitazene is present and does not mean the substance is safe to use.
No. The test is not intended to determine the safety, purity, or full composition of the substance being examined. A positive or negative result should not be interpreted as proof that a substance is safe to use.
Nitazenes have been found in the unregulated drug supply, including in samples expected to contain opioids. Canadian public health data notes that nitazenes were first identified in Canada’s unregulated drug supply in 2019.
Signs of an opioid overdose can include slow or stopped breathing, loss of consciousness, blue or grey lips or fingertips, choking or gurgling sounds, and inability to wake up. Because nitazenes are opioids, suspected exposure should be treated as a medical emergency.

Nitazenes are a class of synthetic drugs that have gained attention in the United States and other countries in recent years. The prevalence of nitazenes in the illegal drug supply has been on the rise since 2019. Nitazenes are ultra-high potency synthetic opioids, Isotonitazene and Protonitazene are up to 8 times stronger than fentanyl, while etonitazepyne and protonitazepyne surpass fentanyl’s potency by a staggering 20 times.
Toronto Drug Checking services have detected various types of Nitazenes in anticipated Fentanyl drug samples, alongside other substances. The breakdown of percentages is as follows: Metonitazene at 5%, Isotonitazene/Protonitazene at 2%, and N-desethyl isotonitazene, along with other variants, accounting for less than 1%2.
In the UK, nitazenes have been detected in substances sold as other opioids such as heroin and oxycodone; benzodiazepines, including diazepam; and cannabis products.3
DEA regional forensic laboratories have seen Nitazenes mixed into heroin and/or fentanyl.4
